The globalisation context, supported by communication technologies changed the way people and organisations think and act.

On the other hand, identities are a natural source for creativity revealing different cultures and ways of seeing. There is a direct relation between desire ('kunstwollen'), representation (designum) and design. The link desire/design emphasises the role of the author/identity in the design process.

The cohabitation between globalisation and identities/sensibilities seems to be inevitable, which may lead to an intervention of design at different levels, namely as a strategic tool for the positioning of organisations in the local/global scenario.

Moreover, design is still confronted with a dramatic context of regional asymmetries, exclusion and non-sustainable development.

What solutions can design offer for these issues?

Papers are invited for submission, which consider design in scientific, educational, managerial, regional, industrial, future, cultural, system, visual research and environmental contexts. Papers should cover the following topics:

- design and identities

- practice-led research

- design theory

- design education

- design management

- strategic design

- eco/environmental design

- gender issues.

The fourth European Academy of Design conference will be held at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal next Easter.
