TRAVELING WITH PETS
READING

(Emily is Anna's sister)

Anna: How did Sebastian do on your flight to Chicago last weekend?
Emily: The airlines said he could travel with me, so not too bad!
Anna: Good. At least he wasn't all alone.
Emily: Fortunately he weighs under 15 pounds, so he could stay in his kennel under my seat.
Anna: So he was within arm's reach.
Emily: Right. I could just reach under my seat, pet him a little, hand him a biscuit, and he was fine!

Sebastian is most likely a ...
a. bird b. cat c. dog

(ANSWER: dog.)
VOCABULARY

What phrase does Anna use to describe Sebastian's proximity to Emily on the plane? That's right, she says that Sebastian was within "arm's reach." That means that something is the distance the arm can reach.

Here's another phrase that uses "arm":

* to keep at arm's length
- Definition: To keep at a distance (literally or figuratively); not to allow to come into close contact.

- Example: Bob isn't interested in making friends with his coworkers. He is polite, but keeps his relationship with them at arm's length.
CULTURAL NOTE

Consider these things when traveling by plane with your pet!

Make sure ...

* your airline accepts pets!
* your carry-on kennel is airline approved.
* to obtain a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, dated within 10 days prior to travel (in the U.S.).
* not to give any drugs or medication to your pet prior to travel.
* to give your pet plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
PACKING TIP

Don't forget to pack properly for your pet, too! You might even want to have a small "pet suitcase" to keep things separate and conveniently located. Consider packing things like: blanket, pillow, bowl, towels, toys, snacks, and medical kit. You might also like to pack a bandana (or scarf) to wrap around your pet's neck. A bandana can make your pet seem more friendly and approachable!
GRAMMAR

Adjective or Adverb?

Many adverbs end in -ly (for example: happily, nicely ). But some words that end in -ly are adjectives, not adverbs. In the Packing Tip, can you find two -ly words that are adverbs? And one -ly word that is an adjective? (adverbs: properly, conveniently ; adjective: friendly )

Here are some other important -ly words that are always adjectives:

lovely, lonely, ugly, silly, cowardly, likely, unlikely
