“Doesn’t any of your dream remain?” asked Miss Manette. “Oh, Mr Carton, think again! Try again!”
“No, Miss Manette. I know it is hopeless. But I want you to know that you are the only one who has made me want to change. You lit this fire inside me, even if it did no good.”
“I am sad to have made you more unhappy than you were before you knew me, Mr Carton.”
“Don’t say that, Miss Manette. If anyone could have helped me, it would have been you.”
“You have described your thoughts to me, and told me how I have some power over you,” said Miss Manette. “Can use my power to help you become a good man?”
“I know the best thing that I can do now, Miss Manette. Let me always remember this conversation with you. I shall remember that you were the last person that I told all my feelings to. I will remember that you were kind, and that you wanted me to change my ways.”
“I ask you to believe that you can be better, Mr Carton,” said Miss Manette.
“Don’t ask me to believe it any more, Miss Manette,” he said. “I have proved to myself that I cannot. Will you promise never to tell anyone about our conversation? I want to think that you are the only one who shares it with me.”
“Yes, I promise, if that will help you,” she answered.
“Will you promise not to tell any person, even if you love them?” he asked.
“Mr Carton, I promise never to speak about it.”
“Thank you,” he kissed her hand and walked towards the door. “I will never continue this conversation, Miss Manette,” he said, “so do not worry about it. Until the hour I die, I will have this one good memory. I will remember that I told you all my feelings. I will know that my name, my faults and my sadness are gently carried in your heart.”
Lucie Manette began to cry as he stood looking back at her. He was so unlike the man people thought he was. It was sad to think how much of his life he had wasted.
“Don’t be sad,” he said. “I am not worth such feelings. In an hour or two I shall be back with my bad habits and my bad companions. But inside myself I will always be in love with you. Please believe this!”
“I will, Mr Carton,” she said.
“My last wish is this,” he said. “It is useless to say this, I know. But it is true. I will do anything for you or for anyone you love. I promise this, and I want you to remember it. The time will come when your life will change. You will have a husband and children who will love you. Remember sometimes that there is a man who would die to keep you and those you love safe and happy!”
