Bush’s First Crisis
布什的第一个危机

Three days before George W. Bush is inaugurated president, OPEC oil ministers will meet in Vienna and in all likelihood slash oil production, raising crude prices worldwide.
Bush has tapped energy industry boardrooms for some of his top advisers, including his vice president and his secretary of commerce. For all of them, the answer to the country’s energy problems is production. “When we’re undersupplied (in the energy field) as a nation and demand increases, prices will go up,” Bush told reporters recently, vowing to find ways to boost supplies of natural gas, oil and coal for America’s energy-hungry society. But those are long-term solutions. “There is not much the president can do in the near term to take care of these prices, except put measures in place that have a psychological effect, that calm the market,” says Jay Saunders, an energy analyst for Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown.
