Jiang Qing
(1913 - 1991)
In a country where females are so little valued that parents often simply abandon infant daughters, Chinese revolutionary heroine Jiang Qing amassed astonishing power. Fourth wife of Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong, Jiang, a former B-movie vamp, led the notorious Gang of Four during the 10-year period of murder and mayhem known as the Cultural Revolution (begun by Mao in 1966 to purge the Chinese Communist Party of “enemies”). Teenaged radicals, recruited from the countryside, were dispatched to disrupt schools, root out capitalists and execute traitors. Some 400,000 people died and a million more were touched by the violence.
Jiang encouraged the outrages, and anyone who challenged her was likely to be shipped off to a work farm, or worse. After Mao died in 1976, Jiang and her Gang of Four cronies (all male) were arrested and charged with “towering and heinous” crimes, The star defendant in an infamous 1980 show trial, Jiang--defiant to the end--was convicted and sentenced to death (ultimately commuted to life in prison). She hanged herself in 1991 while still under house arrest.
